The Aviation Observatory Meridian ROUTE FORECASTING

Any city pair in the world, forecast, priced and ready to present to an airline.

Meridian turns weeks of route analysis into an afternoon, for any city pair in the world. The assumptions and the method come with every forecast, and in expert mode your analysts can set each variable and run their own assumptions through the same engine and the same data, so Meridian speeds up your forecasting rather than replacing it.

Meridian is a route forecasting tool. It forecasts passenger demand for any city pair in the world, point to point and connecting, analyses hub connectivity and catchment leakage, sets the forecast against indicative airline economics, and produces a presentation your team can take to an airline. The method and assumptions are stated with every forecast, and the assumptions can be modified. Licences are annual, per organisation, and priced by the number of airports covered and the number of users.

01 · Process

From market to presentation

  • 1 · Forecast the market

Any origin and destination, served or unserved. Demand for the direct service, local and connecting, including traffic currently routing over other hubs.

  • 2 · Test the service

Market share by carrier from a calibrated quality of service model. Change the frequency, schedule or aircraft and re-run the forecast; every assumption is stated and can be modified.

  • 3 · Price the economics

Indicative route economics in language an airline recognises: load factor, revenue and how demand varies through the year.

  • 4 · Generate the presentation

An airline-ready route presentation at the click of a button: market, forecast, economics and the business case.

02 · Capabilities

What is in the tool

Meridian capabilities
AreaWhat Meridian provides
CoverageAny city pair in the world, served or unserved
DemandPoint to point and connecting demand, with unserved markets forecast from observed connecting flows and comparable markets
Market shareShare by carrier and route from a quality of service index model calibrated on observed bookings
ScenariosFrequency, schedule and capacity scenarios against the same demand base, so alternatives are compared like for like
EconomicsIndicative airline economics for the proposed service: load factor, revenue and seasonality
Hub connectivityConnecting routes over hubs analysed with the route case: feed, schedule timing and the connectivity a service adds
Catchment leakagePassengers from the airport's catchment travelling via other airports, quantified, with the recapture a new service would achieve
Output presentationAn airline-ready route presentation, within the fair-use allowance in the licence terms
DataIndustry schedules and bookings data built in; no separate data licences to negotiate
ProvenanceEvery figure states its source, date, units, scenario and method

03 · In the meeting

A forecast your team can explain in language airlines understand

Airlines test a route case with questions. Meridian states the assumptions behind every figure and lets your team change them, so the questions can be answered in the meeting rather than after it.

How Meridian is used

Typical users and the question they bring
UserQuestionMeridian solution
Airport route development teamsWhich airline do we approach for a service to a named city, and with what case?Route forecast, economics and the presentation for the meeting
Air service development consultantsHow do we produce credible route cases for several client airports at once?A repeatable method and a consistent document standard
Governments and tourism bodiesWhich new routes would serve the region, and what case would win them?Route forecasts for the routes the region needs, with the case to put to an airline
Aircraft manufacturersWhere is there demand for new routes, and what aircraft and schedule does it suit?Demand, share and timing for any city pair, on one consistent method
Investors and lendersIs the traffic case behind this asset believable? An independent route forecast with its assumptions stated
Universities and research institutionsHow do new routes perform, and what drives them?Route forecasts for any city pair, with the method stated

05 · Questions

Your questions answered

Which routes can Meridian forecast?

Any city pair in the world, served or unserved. Where a route is unserved, the forecast draws on demand observed over connecting routes and on markets with similar characteristics.

Does it forecast connecting traffic as well as point to point?

Yes: local demand and traffic connecting behind, beyond and over the route. A route case without connecting traffic analysis lacks credibility in an airline meeting.

Does Meridian use QSI?

Yes. The market share model is a quality of service index model, calibrated on observed bookings.

How accurate is it?

When this model was used to forecast the new routes that launched since 2016, 88% of its forecasts were within 20% of what the route went on to carry and 78% within 10%, across 6,524 launches. The past does not predict the future, but that is the record.

Can we change the assumptions?

Yes. Assumptions are stated and editable, and the presentation generated sets out the assumptions used, so you can show an airline exactly how the forecast numbers were built.

How is it priced?

An annual licence per organisation, priced by the number of airports it covers and the number of users. Prices will be published in November 2026: one price list for every organisation, with each quotation confirmed in writing. Consultancies and airport groups receive a quote based on the airports they cover. Meridian is not currently licensed to airlines.
